To prepare your garden for winter during autumn, start by clearing away dead plants, fallen leaves, and debris to prevent pests and diseases from overwintering. Mulch around perennials and shrubs with a thick layer of organic material like straw or bark to insulate roots from freezing temperatures. Prune back dormant plants, but avoid heavy pruning on spring-blooming varieties. Plant hardy bulbs for spring color, and protect tender plants with frost cloths or by moving pots indoors. Finally, drain irrigation systems and store tools to avoid damage from the cold.
